Simon James French Some gorgeous moments on this one, Samphire is beautiful and a close runner up for favourite but the atmosphere on Tidal is just too beautiful to not fall in love with. Favorite track: Tidal.

about

Humber Trader ~ River Spells was recorded between January and June 2023, whilst living aboard an 'off the grid' barge named Humber Trader, moored on the Deben River in Suffolk. As a boy I had sailed on the River Deben and with my recent return to the U.K and also moving aboard the Trader I felt as though the river would accept me or swallow me up. There were many frigid cold days of fog and mist and bad health. I commuted to London for my day job leaving at 6am and would return each day at 7.30pm to a freezing cold boat that would need warming enough to sleep in her. These tracks are a result of this cycle, and as the coming Spring promised warmth, the solitude and space of the river gave fruit to these sketches. I spent a long time thinking about how to release patches made on the Modular, whether to rework recordings by adding elements or chopping them up and use them as backdrops for new layers and I still struggle with these ideas.
This set of recordings are made in one take, with no added audio in post production, they are as they were recorded on the day and then once again the Modular synth is unpatched, and as such these are unique tracks never to be repeated. There is I hope a magic instilled in this process, a sense of 'Terroir', a meaning in production more than production itself.

"They are incantations, invocations, less like tracks and more like vessels for intentions and manifesting"
